The first group of 17 Ghanaians schooling in Ukraine arrived Ghana on Tuesday morning at Kotoka International Airport, in the capital, Accra.
Ghana is now the first African country to evacuate its citizens fleeing the conflict in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
Earlier, foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said about 460 Ghanaian students had left Ukraine to Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic following Russia’s invasion.
The students she said will be received by officials from the countries’ diplomatic missions, honorary consuls, and officials of the Ghana students’ associations and are expected to return to Ghana in coming days.
The government has invited parents and guardians of the students to a meeting in the capital, Accra, on Tuesday.
Over 1,000 Ghanaian nationals are currently working or studying in Ukraine.
