The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has asserted that out of 80 million youths in the country, at least 70% are unemployed.
This was disclosed by the Benue State Director of the Agency, Richard Abimiku on Thursday during a National Youth Summit in Makurdi, Benue state Capital.
Abimiku noted that the youths would be of great benefit to national development only if they are given the opportunities to showcase their talents and resources.
“It will interest you to know that Nigeria has a youthful population of about 80 million, which is about 60 percent of its entire population. Although about 70% of the 80 million are unemployed; it is no doubt that the most productive years of an individual is when he/she is still a youth.
“While acknowledging the efforts of some youths in various professional fields, like sports, academic, ICT and entrepreneurship among others, it is important to keep youths on their toes, helping them to think and act positively despite the challenges,” he said.
