French President, Emmanuel Macron at the Financing Africa Summit in Paris on Tuesday called on the World Health Organisation, World Trade Organisation, and the Medicines Patent Pool to lift all constraints on vaccine patents to allow Africa manufacture on the continent.
The first high-level meeting of its kind since the pandemic began was held to boost financing in Africa amid the Covid-19 pandemic from May 17-18.
All delegates at the summit agreed that without an exit from the Coronavirus health crisis, there can be no exit from the economic crisis.
40% of people in Africa should be vaccinated against covid-19 by the end of 2021, Macron stated.
The International Monetary Fund, China, Europe and other international players all agreed to vaccinate 20% of the African population, exceeding the COVAX target.
According to WHO, Africa has over 4.7 million confirmed COVID-19 cases with 126,000 deaths.
