Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubarak, has condemned and called for the creation of a new police unit to save schools from banditry.
He made this remark while reacting to the abduction of 73 students at Government Day Secondary School Kaya, Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State on Wednesday.
” I am saddened by reports of yet another abduction of students in Zamfara. For a region that’s playing catch-up in the critical area of education, this continued assault on the bedrock of our development is not acceptable, “he said.
Atiku in his statement suggested it is high time to have a School Protection Standby Unit deployed to protect schools in areas where bandits are attacking.
“Perhaps the time has come to have a School Protection Standby Unit deployed exclusively to protect schools in areas prone to these attacks.
“If we don’t take preemptive actions, I fear that education in the already disadvantaged regions may suffer irreversible losses.”
However, governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has appealed to the people of the state to intensify prayers for God’s intervention to end banditry in the state.
Matawalle made the call during a special prayer session organised by the Ulamau Consultative Committee all over the state.
The governor who attended the prayer at the Gusau Central Mosque said it has become imperative for the citizens to complement the government and security operatives’ efforts in tackling the menace in the state.
