The African Union has suspended Mali’s membership and threatened sanctions following last week’s military coup.
Former Vice Pesident, Assimi Goita, took over the affairs of the West African nation and was declared president last week Friday after the arrests of interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, who have resigned.
The African Union in a statement on Tuesday called for a transparent and swift return to the civilian-led transition.
The AU said it “strongly urges the Malian military to urgently and unconditionally return to the barracks, and to refrain from further interference in the political processes in Mali.”
However, the council said it “will not hesitate to impose targeted sanctions and other punitive measures against any spoilers of the current transition.”
