An autopsy carried out on late Kubiat Isaac Akpan, a prospective National Youths Service Corps member (NYSC) who died in Police cell in Akwa Ibom State has shown that Akpan was tortured to death.
This was disclosed by the lawyer representing the deceased family, Inibehe Effiong.
The lawyer, who confirmed to have witnessed the autopsy along with members of the deceased’s family, said it was a horrifying experience.
“He died from torture. It’s so terrible; I have never witnessed that in my life,” Efffiong said.
The State Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme had ordered the autopsy following controversies that surrounded the cause of Kubiat’s death while in detention.
On his part, the Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, said that he could not react to the issue until it is officially submitted, adding that whenever the medical report is made public, the command will let the whole world know about it.
The police spokesman who said that investigation revealed that the deceased was arrested for alleged criminal activities, added that it is only the law court that has the right to determine whether someone is guilty or not.
“So, the young man will carry the cross if he is guilty. That is how our system works. We have already made up our minds. We ordered that investigation and with all sincerity, the reason he was arrested was the criminal allegations against him.
“The moment we get these, we will let the whole world know.”
