Ballon d’Or 2021: Messi Outshines Lewandowski, Others to Bag Seventh Ballon d’Or

PSG superstar, Lionel Messi has again been named the best player on the planet, with Robert Lewandowski finishing as runner-up.
He was announced as the ballon d’Or winner at prestigious awards ceremony held in Paris, France, on Monday.
Bayern Munich goal machine, Lewandowski finished second while Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho was third in the voting by a jury of journalists from around the world.
There were 14 Premier League players among the 30 players shortlisted for the award, including five Chelsea player, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount,Cesar Azpilicueta and Romelu Lukaku, who scored the goals that helped Inter Milan to their first Serie A title in 11 years before he moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Four England players Mount, Phil Foden, Harry Kane, and Raheem Sterling were on the list after helping the national side to a first major final in 55 years at the Euros this summer.
Other nominees based in England are Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Riyad Mahrez, Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes, and Cristiano Ronaldo who came sixth on the list.
Messi topped the chart after enjoying another memorable year with club and country.
Past Ballon d’Or Awards
Lionel Messi won the first Ballon d’Or award in 2009, making him the first player from his country to be crowned World Footballer of the Year. Messi beat Ronaldo to win the award after helping Barcelona to win an historic treble of the Liga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey.
He won the second Ballon d’Or award in 2010 after leading Barcelona to success in La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. The 60 goals he subsequently scored for his club and country in 2011 mad him to be regarded by many as the most gifted player of his generation.
In 2012, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were back in Zurich but this time, it was a little closer. Messi received 41.6% of the votes as opposed to Cristiano’s 23.68%. Messi collected the Ballon d’Or for the fourth year running.
In 2013 and 2014 editions, Cristiano beat Messi but Messi bounced back to pick up his fifth Ballon d’Or in December 2015 and won the sixth ballon d’or award in 2019, beating Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk by a seven-point margin.
