President Muhammadu Buhari has invited the 360 members of the House of Representatives to a dinner on Monday (today).
The lawmakers will be led to the dinner by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, and key officers like the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Suleiman Lasun; the House Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and the Leader of the opposition, Mr. Leo Ogor.
Investigations indicated that the dinner, scheduled to start by 8pm, would be held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
A copy of the President’s invitation to lawmakers, which was obtained in Abuja on Sunday, did not give further details; but Dogara was requested to attend the dinner with all 360 lawmakers.
Part of the letter, read, “May I humbly inform the Honourable Rt. Speaker that President Muhammadu Buhari will host to a dinner, honourable members of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 20.00 hours (8pm).
“The venue is the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
“You are kindly requested to come along with all the honourable members.”
The document, with reference number SH/COS/70/A/8681, was signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari.
A source in the National Assembly, who declined to be named, said that the dinner was organised to create a forum for Buhari and the lawmakers to meet and exchange ideas on “state matters.”
The source added, “The President has long promised that he will be creating this kind of forum regularly to meet with members of the National Assembly.
“It is to enhance executive-legislature bonding and to ensure that the two sides have a meeting point on national issues.”
However, it was gathered that the two sides would discuss, over dinner, the operations of the Buhari government in the last one year.
