Akwa United beat CR Belouizdad of Algeria 1-0 at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, on Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round match.
Friday Ubong registered a late goal as he striked thunder shot into the net four minutes from the end of regulation time to give Akwa united first winning in the competition.
Akwa United was on top of their game but failed to convert number of chances to goal. The Second leg of the match will be played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on September 19.
Similarly, Rivers United also won 1-0 over Tanzanian side, Yanga SC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round clash which took place at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Sunday.
Moses Omodumuke gave Rivers United first winning with his only golden goal in match as they returned to the continental level for the first time since they were knocked out by Zesco United in 2019.
Rivers United failed to convert their first chance in the fourth minute as Nelson Esor was unable to beat Yanga’s goalkeeper Diarra Djigui from close range.
The Nigerian side had another scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute when Eyinnaya Kazie maneuvered the Yanga defenders and had a shot which end up beside goal post.
United almost conceded in the 25th minute when goalkeeper Victor Sochima failed to clear the ball from danger area but Yanga’s Yacouba Sogne failed to put the ball into an almost empty net. Nonetheless, United defend their only goal till the last minute of the game to ensure they picked up a win and away goal in the first leg before hosting the Tanzanian giants on Sunday.
