A pro-Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, group, the Save PDP Group, has warned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, against interfering in the affairs of the National Assembly.
The group berated APC leadership over its nonacceptance of the recent election of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. APC had kicked against the emergence of the NASS leaders prompting the Save PDP Group to condemn the action. However, the APC has since made a u-turn and accepted the election of both Saraki and Dogara, while also pledging to work with both of them to move Nigeria forward. Chairman of the group, Chief Perry Opara, told Sunday Tribune in Abuja, that the stance of the APC leadership on the NASS election was a show of shame. “We are in a democracy.
No party should dictate to elected members of the National Assembly who should be first amongst equals,” he said. According to him, APC’s meddlesomeness in the affairs of the National Assembly will not be good for Nigeria’s democracy.
Opara, however, congratulated Saraki and Dogara for their victory at the elections. He said: “The emergence of Saraki/Dogara has shown that the new crop of members of the National Assembly are credible persons who have the interest of Nigeria at heart. We salute the courage of our elected members of the eighth National Assembly. “We congratulate our leader, Senator David Mark for galvanizing the PDP members in the National Assembly and his very credible selection as the leader of the PDP in the Senate. “Our felicitation also goes to Senator Ike Ekweremadu for his victory as Deputy President of the Senate. Senator Ekweremadu is the pride to the Igbo race and a rare gem in the Nigerian Senate.”
