Defending Champions Portugal have crashed out of Euro 2020 after a 1-0 defeat to Belgium on Sunday evening.
Thorgan Hazard’s first-half goal gave Belgium a tense win over the holders to set up a quarter-final tie against Italy at Euro 2020.
Belgium lost Kevin De Bruyne to an ankle injury after a late challenge by Portugal midfielder, Joao Palhinha shortly before half-time, while Eden Hazard may also be a doubt to face Italy in Munich on Friday having walked off clutching his hamstring late on.
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo could not muster a moment of magic for his country as their European Championship defense was ended by Belgium in the last 16. He tested Thibaut Courtois with a dipping free-kick in the first half but the 36-year-old neither broke the international goals record nor added to his five for the tournament.
Raphael Guerreiro went closest to a late equalizer when his shot came back off the post but Belgium were the braver, more fluid team and deservedly edged through.
