The Acting Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Karebo Samson Pere has disclosed that the Federal Fire Service received over 2,845 Fire Calls, recued 260 Emergencies, saved 587 lives in the year 2021.
Karebo disclosed this on Thursday during the pull-out ceremony of the immediate past controller general of the federal fire service of Dr. Liman Ibrahim.
According to the acting CG, 36 lives were lost in the year 2021 as a result of fire accident, while an estimated property of about 18,996.47 Trillion were saved and an estimated property of 3,045.27 Trillion was lost in 2021, adding that the major causes of fire in the year 2021 was electrical equipment related.
While delivering his address, Karebo lauded the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for the relentless effort the government has put together to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians.
He further thanked President Buhari for the support given to the immediate past CGF Dr Liman Ibrahim by making sure fire trucks and necessary tools were provided for the service for easy discharge of duties.
Speaking further, Karebo appreciated Dr. Liman whom he described as a “Man who stood out in selfless service to the nation.”
According to Karebo, “currently, our operational scope has spanned all states of the Federation and the FCT and ever since, efforts have been made to deploy personnel and assets to the 72 remaining Senatorial Districts, thanks to the commitment, hard work and ingenuity of the retired Controller General of Federal Fire Service, Dr Liman Ibrahim”.
Dr. Liman, in order to further optimise service delivery to match international best practices during his tenure ensured that the following amongst others were planned and executed in the service:
a) Promotion of 1, 276 officers in 2019 promotion exercise and 157 officers were recently promoted in the 2020/2021 promotions. This promotion has given Top Management a boost as we now have 2 Deputy Controller Generals (DCGs), 14 Assistant Controller Generals (ACGs), 9 Controllers (CFs), 11 Deputy Controllers of Fire (DCFs) and 26 Assistant Controllers of Fire (ACFs)
b) Commissioned and deployed 141 nos state-of-the-art firefighting trucks, 20 nos ambulances and a hydraulic platform across the six (6) geo-political zones to complement the State Fire Services operations and reduce response time to fire and other emergencies between 2019 & 2021.
c) Aggressive capacity building with the training of fire Officers of several batches in Belarus, the United Kingdom, and in some parts of the country on Fire and Rescue, Investigation, Incident command, Hydraulic Platform Operations just to mention a few.
Karebo said “the Federal Fire Service in her efforts to ensure a safe haven across the country in Fire and other Emergency situation launched an awareness and training campaign for children and women and plans to take it to schools, traders in selected markets and other public places in the FCT and across the states of the Federation”.
