The first group of 51 evacuees from Afghanistan seeking refuge has arrived in Uganda.
The evacuation followed the American government’s request to Uganda, to take in some of the people fleeing the crisis in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover more than a week ago.
Uganda’s foreign ministry in a statement said the group is transiting through Uganda and will move on to the US and other countries.
Also, Rwanda will host dozens of schoolgirls being relocated from Afghanistan.
Shabana Basij-Rasikh, the founder of a privately run School of Leadership, Afghanistan (Sola), said on Tuesday that about 250 students, staff and family members were en-route to Rwanda, through Qatar, to begin a “semester abroad for our entire student body.”
