A former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has dumped the ruling party All Progressive Congress for New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
This was confirmed in a statement issued by the NNPP via its Twitter handle on Tuesday.
Shekarau who has been challenging Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s leadership in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, joined the former Director-General of the Bola Tinubu 2023 Campaign Support Team, Abdulmumin Jibrin, in NNPP to jostle for power.
In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Jibrin said, “Game over! Welcome to NNPP, Sen Ibrahim Shekarau”.
Later, the party tweeted photographs of the visit of NNPP leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to Shekarau’s home.
However, the senator has not publicly made this known, though he has been meeting with Kwankwaso and other NNPP leaders in recent times.
The relationship between Ganduje and Shekarau has been frosty since the APC held its congresses in the state.
Factions of Ganduje and Shekarau produced different leaders. The Shekerau faction produced Haruna Danzago as chairman, while Abdullahi Abbas is leader of the Ganduje faction.
