Fresh crisis is now looming in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the emergence of the Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, as the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF)
It was gathered that some of the governors elected on the platform of the party had kicked against the choice of Mimiko as the chairman of the forum and had consequently petitioned the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to wade into the matter before it degenerated into a full blown crisis.
A competent source at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja said that the NWC would hold a crucial meeting with the governors today on sundry issues relating to how to move the party forward, as well as the chairmanship of the forum. The aggrived governors were said to have protested that the choice of Mimiko did not follow due process, bearing in mind that Mimiko only defected to the party recently.
Governor Mimiko was adopted as chairman of the forum last week, at its meeting attended by six governors and two deputy governors. The PDP Governors’ Forum was floated to drum up support for the re-election of the former president, Goodluck Jonathan, following the crisis that broke out in the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), which led to the emergence of Rotimi Amaechi and the Jonah Jang factions. Former governor, Godswill Akpabio, a supporter of the former president, was then picked as the pioneer chairman of the forum and since he was not returning, a new chairman had to emerge. Though the national publicity secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report for comments over the development, a member of the NWC of the party confirmed the receipt of the petition of the aggrieved governors, saying the NWC would be meeting the governors today, but declined further comment.
