Dr Chike Akunyili, the husband of late public health expert and former Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili, has been reportedly killed on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen in the South East region.
A family source confirmed that “Chike Akunyili was shot on Tuesday night near Onitsha”, the commercial hub of Anambra State.
The brother of the deceased, Cyril Akunyili, also confirmed the newson Wednesday in an Instagram post.
He said, “IPOB killed my senior brother. Why? Husband of Prof Dora Akunyili is dead. IPOB why on a Tuesday?”
The Physician was on his way from Onitsha to Umuoji at Eke Nkpor when the gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, killing him, his driver and his escort instantly.
Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital ahead of burial and police investigation.
The deceased, on Tuesday, attended a lecture at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, put together by the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA), Onitsha branch, in honour of his late wife.
Dr Akunyili, until his death was in charge of St Leo’s Hospital, one of the biggest in Enugu. He graduated first class and spent his professional career treating citizens across Nigeria, including many on charitable grounds.
His wife, who served as NAFDAC chief from 2001-2008, died in an Indian hospital on June 7, 2014 at the age of 59 after a prolonged ailment.
In 2008, Dora was appointed Minister of Information and Communications but she resigned her appointment as Minister of Information and Communications on December 16, 2010, after two years of service to run for office as Senator representing Anambra Central in the National Assembly.
She ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central for the APGA in April 2011 but was defeated by Chris Ngige of the ACN. She was a pharmacist and governmental administrator who gained international recognition and won several awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights.
Chike and Dora had six children.
