The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise was attacked overnight and shot dead by a group of unidentified individuals in his private residence.
According to a statement released by the Interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, Moise’ residence was attacked around 1am on Wednesday by a group of unidentified people, including some speaking Spanish.
The president was mortally wounded before he was shot, while the First Lady suffered bullet injuries.
Interim President Joseph said he was now in charge of the country.
Condemning the “inhumane and barbaric act”, Claude Joseph called for calm, saying the police and the country’s armed forces had taken control of the security situation.
