A little over a month ago we visited the internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Area 1, Abuja. At the time of our visit the IDPs were staying in an uncompleted building owned by a good samaritan. Last week, we went back to get an update on how they were holding up but to our surprise, we were told they’ve been asked to evacuate the premises with immediate effect. The owner of the building had in fact not donated the uncompleted building for their stay, there was some sort of miscommunication and she claimed she was “shocked to see the IDPs populated her uncompleted home.”
After hearing this TOS was faced with the dilemma of calling government attention to the situation and waiting for them to intervene or take action into our own hands. We obviously chose the latter. Today, we’re happy to say that all nearly 200 people living at the IDP camp in Area 1 now have a roof over their heads. It might not be the most comfortable situation but it beats staying on the street. This is just one out of thousands of IDP camps spread across Nigeria where victims of Boko Haram who lost absolutely everything, including loved ones, are left to fend for themselves. Our people are dying of starvation, illnesses, rape and so much more but guess what? The government isn’t doing anything about it, if they are, they aren’t doing enough! Change starts with individuals, so it’s up to You and I. You can email us inquires@theosasushow.com to find out how to get involved. Please note TOS is NOT an NGO, we do not collect donations of any sort but we can point you in the right direction if you’re interested in getting involved. #TOStuesdays #BridgingTheGap
