Former Wimbledon player, John Fashanu, has said PSG star, Lionel Messi deserves the 2021 Ballon d’Or ahead of Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski.
Messi was on Monday named as the 2021 Ballon d’Or winner at a ceremony in Paris, claiming the trophy for the seventh time in his career.
The Argentine bagged 30 goals for Barca in 36 appearances under the now-sacked Ronald Koeman before joining French giant, PSG last season.
Meanwhile, the Bayern striker scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season.
Polish striker was largely accepted as the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or in 2020 because of his goal-scoring exploits for Bundesliga champions Bayern but the award was cancelled that year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While many have faulted the decision to name Messi the winner of the ballon d’Or award, Fashanu said that former barca captain, deserves the award for the seventh time.
“I think just Messi’s name alone deserves it.
“He absolutely deserves the Ballon d’Or because this is a player that has been around for a long time and he is doing very well.
“Let’s be very honest I think he is a deserved winner and I definitely believed the right person has been announced,” he said.
On Lewandowski losing ballon d’Or award to Messi, Fashanu added, “We are all legend in our way and I really feel bad for Robert Lewandowski because he also had a fantastic season and I do appreciate his talent but you also cannot rule out the fact that Messi was also outstanding.
“He has been an excellent player every season and he led Argentina to win the Copa America where he also emerged the tournament’s highest goal scorer.”
