President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera has dismissed the Minister of Labor, Ken Kandodo and some senior officials over alleged misuse of COVID funds.
President Chakwera said the action followed an audit he had channeled into the spending of 6.2 billion Malawian kwacha for COVID response.
The labour minister has been accused of using the COVID funds to pay for travel expenses to South Africa.
The president stated that although the minister had paid back the funds, but the money was still not available for use when needed the most.
He said there would be “no sacred cows” noting that more than a dozen senior officials involved in the audit report, including in his office and the entire cabinet, had already been arrested.
He therefore promised there would be more arrests within the civil service.
While addressing the country, the president said: “I cannot have in my cabinet any individuals who either spend money budgeted for one thing on something else or do not ask tough questions to ensure that the money they are spending on something was budgeted for that purpose.”
