Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Mali’s ousted former head of state, died at 9am (GMT and local) on Sunday at his home in the capital Bamako, according to his family.
Keita, known as IBK, led Mali from September 2013 to August 2020, when he was toppled by the military, after months of anti-government protests.
His administration was a turbulent one that saw a violent Islamist insurgency take over large areas of the centre and north, helping drain his popularity.
The cause of death was not yet clear. He was aged 76.
