
The Federal Ministry of Health yesterday 17th November marked this year’s World Prematurity and Pneumonia day in Abuja. In marking the day, the Ministry organised a special health educative session tagged: Innovation To End Pneumonia And Complications of Prematurity.
Speaking at the occasion the President of NiSONM, Professor ChinyereEzeaka said, “the Federal Ministry of Health is re-enacting it commitment to ensure that every baby is given the opportunity to live by the introduction of the Kangaroo Mother care.”
Prof.Ezeaka further added that, the Kangaroo mother care is an introduced method for children born prematurely help them survive rather than die at infancy.
The president NiSONM said the Kangaroo system was coined from the Kangaroo animal which gives birth to its little joey prematurely and carries her little joey in her pouch to provide warmth, intimacy, protection and provision for joey.
“The method is very effective as it is quite affordable and void of machinery, if properly adopted, prevents untimely death… even though premature kids are born too soon due to circumstance, they are not required to die,” she said.
She encouraged Nigerians to adopt the Kangaroo method as it would help reduce mortality rate in Nigeria.
