A family Member of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Joseph Egbunike who pleaded anonymity Tuesday confirmed his demise.
According to the family member, Egbunike died Tuesday evening at the National Hospital in Abuja where he had been taken to after falling ill two days earlier.
IGP Mourns
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, has confirmed the death of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Joseph Egbunike, who was in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the supervisory DIG in charge of the South-East.
This was contained in a statement signed by acting Force Public Relations Officer on behalf of IGP, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday.
The statement noted that Egbunike died at 9pm on Tuesday March 8, at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.
According to the statement, “DIG Egbunike was a dedicated and seasoned police officer who served the nation in various capacities including as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Police Accounts and Budget. An officer with finesse and commitment to intellectual development and was instrumental to the achievements of the giant strides within the Police architecture.
“The Inspector-General of Police hereby condoles with the immediate family, relatives, and friends of the deceased DIG who passed away in active service of his fatherland and prays for the repose of his soul.”
Egbunike headed the panel set up by the police to investigate the embattled deputy commissioner of police Abba Kyari over the latter’s links with the international fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly called Hushpuppi.
