The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), joined by many civil society and student groups on Tuesday marched along Osogbo/Gbongan road, Ogo-Oluwa Area of Osogbo in protest, to ask the Federal Government to resolve the disagreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and reopen universities nationwide.
The large number of protesters led by the state NLC vice chairman, Gbadebo Awotayo bore placards with inscriptions, urging the Federal Government to end the strike. Many motorists were forced to use other routes to get to their destinations as the protesters blocked the route.
Operatives of the Department of State Security, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the police were also seen at locations along the route as the protesters moved towards the Osun State House of Assembly.
The chairman of ASUU, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife chapter, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, also led his members to participate in the protest, urging the government to desist from using blackmail against the Union and honour agreement reached with the lecturers.
