The Katsina State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Tuesday, rejected Saturday’s House of Representatives by-election result for the Mashi/Dutsi federal constituency, insisting the Independent National Electoral Commission must declare it inconclusive because of alleged malpractices which the party maintained disenfranchised over 13,000 voters.
The party made the declaration in Katsina at a press conference addressed by its chairman, Alhaji Salisu Majigiri.
The PDP maintained that despite the impressive turnout of voters on the election day, what happened on Saturday “was a threat to Nigerian democracy and rape of justice and freedom of expression.”
The party alleged that thugs and security operatives denied voters their rights to vote, saying indeed, more than 13,000 voters were either denied access to the voting venues, harassed at gunpoint and threatened by thugs. “These are all in addition to vote-buying that characterised the elections,” the party added.
