Police arraign cleaner for car theft

The police on Tuesday arraigned a cleaner, Emmanuel Kunle, 34, of CBN Quarters, Durumi, Abuja, in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, charged with theft. The prosecutor, Sgt. Mohammed Ahmed, told the court that one Suleiman Abubakar of Durumi, Abuja, reported the matter at Maitama police station, Abuja, on Aug. 19.

He said that sometimes in June 2015, the complainant engaged the accused person to clean his apartment for him. Ahmed said that when the complainant travelled to Ibadan much later after he had engaged the cleaner, the accused went to his house and stole his black Toyota Camry car, using the spare key.

The prosecutor said that when the complainant returned to his house from his trip, he could not find his car and the spare key. He noted that all efforts to locate the accused person failed, until he was recently located and arrested at Federal Housing Estate Lugbe in Abuja, saying the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge against him and the Senior Magistrate, Folashade Oyekan, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties, who should reside within the jurisdiction of the court. He adjourned the matter until Nov. 26 for trial.
