Ijaw youths, under the support of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) took to protests on Thursday, closing down the Headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission Eastern By-Pass in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to Ibiso Harry, Secretary of IYC, the protest was a directive from the IYC President, Peter Igbifa as a result of the expiration deadline given to the Federal Government to constitute a substantive board for the NDDC.
The protesters, about 700 in number raised the Green-Red-Blue IYC flag in front of the commission’s secretariat, preventing any form of movement as they were all dressed in the council’s uniform.
The youths mounted two tents in front of the main entrance of the headquarters, singing and dancing to solidarity songs as they vowed to remain there until the NDDC board was inaugurated.
However, a team of policemen with security vehicles were spotted at the complex monitoring the protest.
