Chi Modu, one of the most famous and legendary photographers in hip-hop history is dead at age 54.
His family announced his demise via his official Instagram and Twitter pages. The caption read: “Our hearts are broken… We continue the fight. The family request privacy at this time.”
But details surrounding his death were not released.
Chi Modu was born on July 7, 1966 in Nigeria and raised in New Jersey. He graduated with a degree in Economics from Rutgers University in 1989 and received a certificate in Photojournalism and documentary photography in 1992.
He is well known for his photographs of hip-hop artists in the 1990s, which were the defining years of the hip hop era. He took pictures of artists such as Biggie, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige, the Notorious B.I.G. and Wu-Tang Clan. His photos were notable for the personal and intimate camera angles of the famous music artists.
