Sarri tips Man City to lift Champions League trophy

Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri has named Manchester City as his favourites to lift the Champions League trophy this season.

City cruised to a 4-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday evening and topped Group C to secure their place in the knockout stage of the competition.

Though Pep Guardiola’s side have dominated in the Champions League so far this term, their domestic form has dipped dramatically and they sit third in the Premier League table, 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.

However, Sarri believes this could give City the edge in Europe where they can concentrate their efforts, while the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich still have it all to play for in their respective leagues.

The continent’s elite clubs will discover their last 16 opponents on Monday and it appears Sarri is hoping to avoid the Premier League champions.

“I spontaneously think of Manchester City as my favourite,” the Italian said following Juve’s 2-0 win away to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night.

“The impression I have got of this team has convinced me and they will probably focus more on the Champions League than on the Premier League this season.”
