Members of the Senate on Tuesday, observed a minute silence in honor of the victims of the 21-storey building collapse in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
The senate position came after a point of order was raised on the matter by the senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Oluremi Tinubu.
About 42 persons were killed after the building collapsed last week. Sixteen persons were rescued alive, while efforts were ongoing to rescue others still trapped in the building.
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan urged professional bodies to ensure that only competent and qualified professionals were involved in construction works. He also directed the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria and others in the construction industry to make sure that only professionals were involved in building projects.
The Senate President said, “This is one collapse too many and it is unfortunate. This is to call on the leadership of COREN and other professional bodies in the construction industry to maintain the highest degree of competence.
“They should also ensure that only qualified and certified professionals are engaged in construction to avert the type of tragedy that happened in Ikoyi.”
