Senator Zainab Kure has been chosen by Niger state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party to replace erstwhile governor of the state, Babangida Aliyu as party leader.
The party made this known in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Suleiman Aliyu, on Tuesday.
Aliyu said Kure was unanimously endorsed to replace Aliyu whom the party said has automatically returned to his position as party member.
The State Auditor, Mamman Suleja, who moved the motion on behalf of the state executive committee after a stakeholders meeting said, “In appreciation of the contributions of Senator Zaynab Kure to the development of the PDP in Niger state, I move that Senator Zaynab Kure is endorsed as the leader of the PDP in Niger State.”
The party Chairman, Tanko Beji put the motion to a vote with all stakeholders accepting the motion as moved.
In her acceptance speech, Kure called on all party members to double their efforts in ensuring that the party wins the next election and salvage the state.
TOS NEWS reported in March how Niger State chapter of the party suspended Babangida Aliyu, for alleged anti-party activities that led to cracks in the party since 2014.
In a communique issued at the end of an emergency stakeholders’ meeting in Minna on March 29, Aliyu was suspended over six weighty allegations which the party in Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State finds very disturbing and inimical to the party progress.
The party in a statement entitled ‘notice of suspension of Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu from the PDP, Chanchaga LGA’, also accused the former governor of working against former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the party’s governorship candidate in Niger State, Alhaji Umar Nasko by supporting and funding the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015 with the sum of N450 million to defeat his own party.
