According to authorities on Thursday, at least 40 inmates escaped from Boma prison in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Mayor of Boma, Marie Jose Niongo Nsuami, who confirmed the incident explained that the inmates took advantage of loud music playing at a funeral vigil which took place near the prison late Wednesday.
Nsuami said, “There was a funeral vigil of the former director of the prison organised not far from the prison. With all that music noise and the prisoners took advantage of that to escape. If there was no sound of music, the police and military guards could have realised.
“Of these escapees, eight were rearrested while one was shot on the run.”
There have been several other jail breaks at Boma prison, which is crowded and currently in a dilapidated state.
