Saadi Gaddafi, son of the former leader Muammar Gaddafi has been freed by Libyan authorities
He immediately departed on a plane to Istanbul.
“The chief prosecutor asked, several months ago, for the execution of the decision relating to Saadi Gaddafi as soon as all the required conditions had been satisfied,” said the source.
The source also disclosed that Saadi was free to stay in Libya or leave.
The third son of the flamboyant colonel was known for his playboy lifestyle during his father’s reign in Libya.
The 47-year-old went to Niger Republic during the NATO-backed uprising, but was extradited to Libya in 2014 and has been in jail since then in the country’s capital.
Saadi, who was a former professional footballer in Italy, has been in prison after being accused of crimes committed against protesters and of the 2005 killing of Libyan football coach Bashir al-Rayani.
The court of appeal later on acquitted him of Rayani’s murder in April 2018.
The country has suffered chaos, division and violence since the 2011 uprising. In addition to Muammar Gaddafi, three of his sons were also killed.
