Record setting numbers were reported in South Africa over the weekend with more than 26,000 new cases driven by the delta variant according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.
According to the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, South Africa’s 2 million cases account for more than 30% of the cases reported on the continent.
To date, more than 3.3 million of South Africa’s 60 million people have received at least one jab of the Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
More than 13,800 COVID-19 patients are currently in South African hospitals.
The country’s official death toll has risen above 63,000 according to official statistics.
