Several days of inter-communal fighting in the Sudanese region of Darfur have left at least 43 people dead, 46 villages burned and looted and thousands displaced confirmed the United Nations on Thursday.
The conflict broke out last week between Arab nomadic herders and farmers from the in Jebel Moon in West Darfur.
Several people are reportedly missing including children.
“We are also alarmed at reports of rape committed against women and girls as well as reports of 20 children missing,” the U.N. mission to Sudan said, calling on the government and armed groups that signed a peace deal last year to protect civilians.
There have been frequent outbreaks of violence in Darfur since the signing of a peace deal late last year that led to the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers.
