Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, shocked USA 90-87, in an exhibition game on Saturday at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
D’Tigers relentless pace and three-point shooting was too much for USA with Miami Heat guard Gabe Vincent leading way for Nigeria with 21 points.
USA claimed a slim 43-41 advantage over D’Tigers in the first half but Nigeria team push harder to pace and opened up the US team from the opening whistle and fought for every rebound in the post. Unfortunately, USA could not generate a cushion.
In the third quarter, with the scores close, USA’s Damian Lillard showed off his passing chops with a superb sequence with Bam Adebayo.
Despite a late push from Kevin Durant, D’Tigers held on for the win.
It would be recalled that the last time both countries met was at the 2012 London Olympics, with USA winning by 83 points.
USA still have four exhibition games remaining in Las Vegas and will face Australia on Monday for its next game.
