In order to halt Russian invasion in Ukraine, President Joe Biden on Thursday announced additional sanctions on Russian elites, including lawmakers and defence companies.
“I’m announcing additional sanctions on Russian elites, lawmakers, and defense companies in response to Putin’s war of choice in Ukraine.
“They personally gain from the Kremlin’s policies, and they should share in the pain,” President Biden wrote on Facebook.
The sanctions include “severe” restrictions on Russian banks and access to Western technology.”
This announcement comes after the president met with NATO leaders in Brussels.
Prior to the meeting, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson appealed to the world to prevent Russia from using its gold reserves to tighten the sanctions.
His statement partly read, “My message today in NATO will be that there are ways in which the world can continue to intensify the pressure on Putin.
“The more we do that now, the more pressure we apply now, particularly on things like gold, … I believe the more we can shorten the war, shorten the slaughter in Ukraine.”
