Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov and US State Department number two Wendy Sherman on Thursday, held a meeting behind closed doors in Geneva at Russia’s UN mission.
According to a member of Russia’s mission to the UN, the discussions began around 10:00 am (0800 GMT).
The two diplomats were expected to discuss new technologies, space and artificial intelligence.
State Department disarmament, Chief Bonnie Jenkins had earlier said that Washington hoped that “concrete steps” would emerge from the talks in Geneva.
This meeting comes after a June 16 summit between US President Joe Biden and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin where they both said that it was important to keep in contact despite the differences that divide the two nuclear giants.
According to Biden and Putin, Moscow and Washington stayed in contact to prevent a conflict breaking out, even at the height of the Cold War.
