The domestic staff of the late former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, Professor Albert Ilemobade, have narrated how the late university don was killed.
The two suspects— the former driver of the late professor, Yemi Bamitale and the security man, Daniel Ita—during their parade by the police in Ondo State, said that the plan to kill him was hatched a day earlier before they carried out the killing.
The 36-year-old Bamitale said he had been relieved of his duties by the don some months before the incident, saying he had attempted to sell the Toyota jeep after he absconded with it but could not get a buyer.
He said he later brought in Daniel Ita into it, who gave him information about activities in the house. He added that it was Ita that arranged for his transportation to Akure after all arrangements had been concluded.
Bamitale said: “Ita tricked Baba (Professor) by telling him that there was an electrical spark in the house after I’ve stationed myself around the entry of the kitchen. Immediately professor came out, I strangled him.
“After some few minutes, the old man gave up and we dragged him into the generator house and locked him inside the house that Sunday night. We left the house and locked the gate outside so that no one will suspect us.
“We went inside and took the car key and some other items like IPad, two phones, laptop, two bags and N7,000 which we used to buy petrol into the car. We left Akure and headed for Lagos. We left with those items so that the car will not be tracked because professor used these gadgets to activate the car.”
He explained further that they were stopped by some policemen at the entrance of the Ijapo estate. The policemen, however, allowed the vehicle to pass because they recognised Ita as the professor’s security man.
He said they encountered some challenges on the way when men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) booked them for having expired vehicle particulars and that they had to sell the phones and IPad in order to pay for the release of the vehicle.
“We sell the phones and laptops after we were booked by the Road Safety officials. We sold the phones to retrieve the car from them before heading to Ijebu Ode with the hope of selling the car there.”
Ita also corroborated Bamitale’s story, adding that he had earlier visited a herbalist who warned them against killing of their boss. He, however, said Bamitale insisted that the man must be killed.
Ita said Bamitale told him that if Ilemobade was not killed, he would track the car again because he was unable to sell the car at his first attempt because of the tracking.
However, luck ran against the two of them after trying to sell the car in Iloti in Ogun State to a buyer who became suspicious because of the price the suspects wanted to sell the car. He then alerted the police in the area.
Speaking on the arrest, the Ondo State Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, said Ita and Bamitale were arrested with the vehicle by security operatives in Ogun state.
He said “detectives from Ondo State command later discovered that the night guard and the former driver strangled the professor and dumped his body in a store in the compound.”
Eke disclosed that the suspects had confessed to the crime, adding that relatives of the deceased had identified the corpse.
