As a way to promote and strengthen local content, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has inaugurated a committee of National policy on Welding.
The minister said the committee was set up to create a career path for people willing to acquire the right skills in welding and related fields in order to be certified by the Nigerian Institute of Welding (NIW).
While speaking on Thursday, Dr Onu said the federal government is aware of the importance of welding to the development of Nigeria’s economy.
In his words, President of the Nigerian Institute of Welding (NIW), Chief Solomon Edebiri said the establishment of the policy would boost the implementation of the Presidential Executive Oder. The NIW boss also pointed that the new members of the committee on Welding were carefully selected.
On his part, chairman, Drafting of National Policy on Welding and its related field, Professor Okechukwu Ukwuoma asserted that there was a need to enhance welding capacity as a tool for economic development with the potential of growing Nigeria’s GDP by eight million dollars to ten million dollars yearly.
