Former president of Chad, Idriss Deby, a General famously known for his bravery was caught by the greedy grim reaper on the frontline line on Tuesday, therefore thudded in the media just a day after he was declared the winner in the just concluded election.
Since his demise, world leaders have penned condolences to the people of Chad on the departed war maestro.
“I’m deeply shocked and devastated by the sudden death of President Idriss Deby on the battlefront, defending the sovereignty of his country. The late President played a very active role in our regional joint collaboration in the military campaign against Boko Haram terrorists.
“He was a friend of Nigeria who enthusiastically lent his hand to our efforts to defeat the murderous Boko Haram terrorists that have posed grave security challenges not only for Nigeria, but also our African neighbours, particularly Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic.
“The death of President Deby will surely create a big vacuum in the efforts to jointly confront the Boko Haram terrorists and the Islamic State West Africa Province. We must now strive to mobilize even greater collaboration to defeat the terrorists.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I am extending deepest condolences to the people of Chad, and their country’s new leadership.”-President Muhammadu Buhari
“Deep sadness over the news of Deby’s “brutal death.”-Bah Ndaw, President of Mali.
Bah also referred to his demise as “a heavy loss, not only for Chad for which he made the greatest sacrifice, but for the Sahel region and for Africa.”
“It is with great dismay and deep emotion that I learned of the death today of President Idriss Deby Itno.” -Former Prime Minister of Chad from 2003 -2005.
“France lost a brave friend.”- Emmanuel Macron of France.
“I send my most sincere condolences to the Chadian people on the passing away of H.E. Mr. Idriss Deby Itno, President of the Republic, Head of State, Supreme Chief of the Armies, who had just been re-elected.”- Volkan Bozkir, President of the UN general assembly.
Senegal’s President Macky Sall also hailed Deby’s “memory and contribution to stability in the Sahel”.
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu also conveyed his condolences on Twitter, praising Deby’s “bold leadership and … his historic decision to renew Chad’s relationship with Israel.”
TOS News reported that Deby was killed on Tuesday while commanding his forces against the rebels.
Chadian electoral commission on Monday announced that Idriss Deby, who has been in power for 30 years won a sixth term in office.
President Deby who campaigned for peace and security in the country was re-elected with 79.32% of the votes cast.
Chadian army has announced the late president’s 37-year-old son Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a four-star general as his successor.
Deby once said during an annual news conference in 2018: “Have you ever seen a head of state take up arms and go into battle?” “You think I do this because I’m brave? Because I’m courageous? No, I do it because I love this country and I prefer to die on the battlefield than for disorder and misery to descend on the country.”
