The Minister of Defence, Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd), has warned Nigerian troops to respect human right and adhere strictly to their constitutional duties, saying that the “era of impunity is over” in Nigeria.
The minister, who made the call at a Christmas lunch with soldiers of 3 Division, Nigeria Army Damaturu, urged them to remain committed in the fight against insurgency.
Acknowledging the operational challenges faced by the troops in the area, Dan-Ali noted that most of the challenges were being tackled, saying that government was determined to provide the needed logistics to end Boko Haram insurgency.
He said: “While your welfare needs is being addressed, I urge you to continue and dedicate yourselves to your constitutional duties and respect the host communities. We must respect the privileges of all the law abiding citizen of this country. Era of impunity is over, you would be held accountable for every human right violation, in case it’s seen.”
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, commended the troops for responding well to the rigours and dangers in the war against insurgency.
Olonisakin encouraged the troops to sustain the tempo and effectively end the insurgency.
“We are gradually moving into 2016, therefore, we must not rest on our oars to win the war,” he said.
