For helping a pregnant woman deliver her baby in a maize field while it rained, Lance Corporal Humphrey Mangisani was promoted to full corporal.
The Zambian soldier also earned nationwide praise.
The mother who was on her way to the hospital went into labour. Corp Mangisani who was following behind on his own bike of the motorbike the mother was on said he “had to help her in a maize field while it rained,”. He found a razor blade and cut the umbilical cord before taking her to hospital.
“I risked my work by being absent from camp to help her,” the corporal told media.
In honour of his efforts, he was asked to name the baby and he called him Raymond Tembo.
Brig Gen Kelvin Kanguma, Corp Mangisani’s army commander said his actions would change the popular perceptions of soldiers.
